Overview
What Is the Noorani Qaida Course?
The Noorani Qaida is a beginner's booklet that teaches the Arabic letters, the vowel marks and how letters join, so that you can go on to read the Quran. It is read aloud, line by line, while the teacher listens and corrects each sound, until you can read a new word without guessing.
- Ages
- 4 and up, including adults
- Starts from
- The very first letter
- Class length
- 30 or 60 minutes
- Certificate
- On completing the Qaida
Is It for You?
Who Should Start With the Qaida
No Arabic is needed. The course begins with the first letter of the alphabet, so someone who has never seen Arabic script starts at the right place.
A good place to start if
- You cannot read Arabic letters yet, or only know a few
- Your child is about 4 or older and ready to sit with a teacher and repeat sounds
- You learned as a child but have forgotten the letters and vowel marks
- You are new to Islam and want to read the words themselves, not transliteration
Start somewhere else if
- Your child already reads joined words and needs to build fluency: Quran for Kids
- You read the Quran but want your pronunciation corrected: Tajweed
- You are a new Muslim and need the words of salah first: Quran for Reverts
What You Work On
Nine Stages, From Letters to the Quran
The stages follow the Qaida's own order. Each one is read aloud until it is secure, then the next begins.
All 28 Arabic letters and their forms
Each letter's name, shape and sound, including sounds that English does not have.
Letter joining and word formation
How a letter changes shape at the start, middle and end of a word.
Short vowels: Fatha, Kasra, Damma
The small marks above and below a letter that give it an a, i or u sound.
Tanween
The doubled vowel marks that add an n sound to the end of a word.
Madd letters and basic rules
The letters that lengthen a vowel, and how long to hold the sound.
Sukoon
The mark showing a letter has no vowel of its own, so it joins the letter before it.
Shaddah
The mark that doubles a letter, read with a slight stress.
Reading complete Quranic words
Whole words from the Quran, read as words rather than spelled out.
A guided move into reading the Quran
The first pages of the Quran itself, with the teacher alongside.
A certificate is given on completing the Noorani Qaida.
Book or Teacher?
The Qaida Is Free to Download. Why Have a Teacher?
You can find the Noorani Qaida online as a free PDF, along with plenty of recorded lessons. They show you the letters. What they cannot do is hear you.
Several Arabic letters sound alike to an English speaker, and a small mistake repeated for weeks becomes a habit that is hard to undo. In a live class the teacher stops you on the sound, shows you where it is made, and has you say it again before moving on.
Children
Young children learn by repeating after the teacher and going back over the last lesson before starting something new. A parent is welcome to sit in on the free trial, and we suggest it for young children.
Adults
Adults can ask why a letter changes shape or why a sound is held, and get an answer. The class is private, so a mistake stays between you and the teacher.
The Free Trial
A First Class for Someone Who Cannot Read Yet
The trial lasts 30 minutes. For a complete beginner, it goes something like this.
A quick level check
The teacher asks what you or your child already know. For a complete beginner, that takes a minute or two.
The first letters
The teacher introduces the first few letters, says each sound, and has the student repeat it until it is clear.
A recommendation
The teacher suggests a course and how many classes a week would suit, and answers your questions.
The plan on WhatsApp
We send the recommendation and package options on WhatsApp. If you go ahead, classes start within a few days.
Where Beginners Get Stuck
Three Things That Take Practice
- Letters that sound alike
- Pairs such as the two h sounds, or the two k sounds, are hard to tell apart at first. The teacher works on one pair at a time until the student can hear the difference and say it.
- Letters that change shape
- A letter can look quite different at the start, middle and end of a word. Lessons keep coming back to the joined forms until the student recognises them without stopping.
- Guessing a word from its first letters
- Once the letters are known, it is tempting to guess. The teacher asks for every sound to be read as written, which is the habit that keeps Quran reading accurate later.

Scheduling
Fitting the Qaida Into Your Week
Short and regular works better than long and rare when the work is sounds. Two or three classes of 30 minutes a week keep the letters fresh in between, and the student only has to read aloud for a few minutes at a time.
You name the days and times that suit you, and we look for a teacher who is free then. If a slot stops working once the term starts, tell us and we look again.
- You choose the days and times
- Classes run 7 days a week. You tell us the days and times that suit you, and we match a teacher who is free then.
- Confirmed in your own time zone
- Your class time is agreed in your local time. The class stays at the same local time for the family. The teacher adjusts. See class times where you live.
- Moving a class
- Let us know at least 4 hours before and the class is moved and made up, with no limit on makeups. Missed without notice? The class counts, because the teacher waited.
- Weekends
- Saturday and Sunday classes are available. There is a small extra per weekend class, listed on the Pricing page.

Questions About Noorani Qaida
From about 4. Readiness matters more than age: a child who can sit with the teacher and repeat sounds is usually ready, and the free trial will show you.
No. Adults work through the same stages, and because the class is private, the pace and explanations are set for you rather than for an age group.
There is no fixed time. It depends on the student's age, how many classes they take a week and how much they practise in between. After the trial the teacher can give you their own estimate.
This course is only about learning to read Arabic script, up to your first Quranic words. Quran for Kids and Quran for Adults include the Qaida for a student who needs it, then carry on into reading the Quran. The teacher can recommend one in the free trial.
Yes. A certificate is given when a student completes the Noorani Qaida. It is one of only two certificates we give; the other is for completing Hifz.
Reading the Quran itself, still with the teacher. Children carry on in Quran for Kids and adults in Quran for Adults, and Tajweed follows once reading is steady.
