Overview

What Is the Islamic Studies Course?

Islamic Studies covers what a Muslim believes and how that belief is lived: worship, manners and the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him). For a child, lessons often begin with wudu, salah and the stories of the Prophets. For an adult, they can begin with the question that brought you here.

What Is Covered

Six Areas of Study

These are subjects rather than steps. The teacher chooses the order with you, and goes deeper for older students.

  • Aqeedah (core beliefs)

Belief in Allah, the angels, the revealed books, the messengers, the Last Day and qadr, taught as understanding rather than a list.

  • The five pillars in practice

The Shahada, salah, zakah, fasting and Hajj, and what each asks of a Muslim.

  • Fiqh basics: purification, salah, fasting

How to make wudu, pray and fast correctly, step by step.

  • Seerah

The life of the Prophet (peace be upon him), in order.

  • Stories of the Prophets

The Prophets named in the Quran, and what their stories teach.

  • Islamic manners and daily etiquette

Adab at home, with parents, at meals and in the way we speak.

Children and Adults

Same Subjects, Taught Differently

Each class is one student and one teacher, so the level is set for that student, not for a year group.

For children, from about 5

Lessons lean on stories and practical worship: learning wudu by doing it, hearing the story of a Prophet and talking about it. A parent is welcome to sit in on the free trial.

For adults

Lessons are more of a discussion: the reasons behind a ruling, questions about practice, the Seerah in more depth. Useful for adults who practise but never studied the basics formally.

The Free Trial

What the Trial Looks Like Here

  1. What the student knows

The teacher asks a few questions to find out what the student already knows about prayer, belief and the Prophets.

  2. A short lesson

For a child, it might be the story of a Prophet or the steps of wudu. For an adult, it might be a topic you want to start with.

  3. A suggestion

The teacher suggests whether to take Islamic Studies on its own or with a Quran course, and how often.

How to Book the Free Trial

Alongside the Quran

Taking It With a Quran Course

Islamic Studies is usually taken alongside a Quran course, such as Quran for Kids or Noorani Qaida, though it works on its own too.

Ask in the trial how Islamic Studies would fit next to your Quran classes, and we arrange it when you book.

You can ask for a female teacher, and we can arrange one at most times. Read about learning with a female teacher.

Every teacher holds a recognised Quran qualification. Before a teacher joins, we check their original certificates, hear them recite, watch a demo class and check ID and references.

Scheduling

Fitting It Alongside a Quran Class

This course is usually taken alongside a Quran course, so it helps to put the two on different days rather than back to back. One class a week is enough to keep a topic moving.

For a family with more than one child learning, ask us to place the classes in one block so you only have to be free once.

You choose the days and times
Classes run 7 days a week. You tell us the days and times that suit you, and we match a teacher who is free then.
Confirmed in your own time zone
Your class time is agreed in your local time. The class stays at the same local time for the family. The teacher adjusts. See class times where you live.
Moving a class
Let us know at least 4 hours before and the class is moved and made up, with no limit on makeups. Missed without notice? The class counts, because the teacher waited.
Weekends
Saturday and Sunday classes are available. There is a small extra per weekend class, listed on the Pricing page.

Adding It to Your Week

Islamic Studies uses the same packages as every other course, so it can sit next to a Quran course without a separate system.

A plan is a package of classes. The next bill is sent when the package is completed, not on a fixed calendar date. Unused classes in a paid package are refunded.

Packages of classes

FAQ

Questions About Islamic Studies

Both, from about age 5. Children's lessons lean on stories and practical worship, adults' lessons on discussion, and the level is set for the individual student.

Yes, and it usually is. Tell us in the trial which Quran course you take or want, and we will suggest how to fit both into your week.

Tell us in the trial if you follow a particular school of thought, and we will let you know how the teacher handles it.

No. The course is about belief and practice, not reading, and duas are learned with their meanings explained. All our teachers speak English (and Urdu; several also Arabic or Pashto), as listed on each profile.

Usually with purification and prayer, since you need them straight away, then the core beliefs. If reciting the prayer correctly is your first need, Quran for Reverts covers that in detail.
